With overall box office revenue declining year after year and theater attendance down during the holiday movie season, AMC Theaters is testing a new promotion aimed at enticing the public to come see the latest offerings from Hollywood global arthouses known as Paramount, Disney, Universal and Warner Brothers studios. The idea? Free popcorn.
"After extensive market research, we discovered people like popcorn more than they do prequels, sequels, spin-offs, franchise mashups, reboots and remakes. So we thought popcorn could make the stale, Hollywood offerings tolerable,” said AMC CEO Adam Aron, who formerly led the Norwegian Cruise Line and Vail Resorts. “How did I get people on the Norwegian Cruise Line ships? Easy. Free food. People can’t resist free,” added Mr. Aron.
So far the experiment seems to be working. After one full weekend of free popcorn, AMC has seen a 30% increase in ticket sales for prequels, sequels, spin-offs, franchise mashups, reboots and remakes.
“Yeah, movies suck. Everyone knows that. Now with the free popcorn, theaters are finally acknowledging movies suck,” said Marvin College, a resident of Clement, Texas.
"I can’t even tell you how many different actors have played Spider Man in my lifetime. And somehow they all looked the same. Maybe they were all brothers? I don't know,” added Mr. College.
Why are most movies objectively bad? Universal Pictures Chairman Donna Langley had this to say when told the public likes popcorn more than her movies. “No, I’m not offended. The truth is, we’re not really even in the movie business anymore. Movies just happen to be the device we use to sell merchandise, theme park tickets, monthly streaming service subscriptions, and action figures. I actually like popcorn more than our movies too,” Ms. Langley confessed.
Fans of prequels, sequels, spin-offs, franchise mashups, reboots and remakes have a stellar 2018 to look forward to with nearly 40 currently slated for release. Thanks Hollywood.
